HHMI’s BioInteractive site has a lot of useful resources including animations.

It would be nice to design and/or implement cases for teaching core biotechnology concepts such as SDS-PAGE/Western blots, real time RT-PCR, and restriction enzymes. These topics can be challenging for some students, and lectures often are dry… Furthermore, new techniques (e.g., RNAseq) could be taught using cases, but these frequently are not…[Read more]

I do not have access to CITI certification as part of my institution.
Is an IRB for pre-/post surveys and access to student work enough for assessing a case study in a single class?
Is there a need to request […] -

Also, this is a timely and nice blog post on metagenomics from the data analysis side:
http://schaechter.asmblog.org/schaechter/2014/09/of-terms-in-biology-metagenomic-binning.html
I hope to use this blog post as a starting point for discussions in a metagenomics course and from here branch off and read the other linked articles to learn about…[Read more]

Ideally, the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education (jmbe.asm.org/) would be a great place to publish our genomic/metagenomic/ethics work based on the content and audience, but this journal has high […]

Hello everybody!
It’s been a busy summer, and time really disappears when you are having fun in the lab and teaching. Last month at the SCN workshop I talked about the cases I wanted to develop for the bioethics and metagenomics courses I teach.
I have tried to find data or collaborations to obtain “real” data we can analyze and discuss as part…[Read more]

The classification of SOTL studies as being either “what is” or “what works” really made me think. The lab module I designed had an enrollment of 10 and is taught once a year (fall 2014 will be the second offering). While I did do pre- and post- self-assessments and a series of activities,…[Read more]

I’m a teaching postdoc at North Carolina State University in the Biotechnology Program. My background is in microbiology and infectious diseases. I now teach molecular biology courses and bioethics and have also developed a metagenomics lab module. While I have known about case studies since my days at Emory, I really don’t know how to use the…[Read more]

Hi, Carlos. I’m interested in developing materials for teaching these techniques also.
Since you mentioned tutorials, here is a tutorial I’ve used for teaching Western Blotting. It includes some mock data for students to analyze:
